7 Treatment STEP 6: Recognize When To Initiate Empiric Antibiotics Should asymptomatic bacteriuria be treated? ➤ Screening for and treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria is not recommended for older adults residing in PALTC facilities except before undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate or other urologic procedures associated with mucosal trauma. How should residents with suspected UTI be managed if clinical criteria are not met? ➤ For residents that do not meet clinical criteria for UTI (and do not have warning signs), but for whom clinical concern for UTI still exists, "active monitoring" is recommended. [See Active Monitoring Protocol under Monitoring] How should residents with suspected UTI be managed if clinical criteria are met? ➤ For residents that meet clinical criteria for a UTI, clinicians should send a urine specimen for urinalysis and culture and then initiate empiric antibiotics. [See Table 1]
