GUIDELINES - INDUSTRY'S ROLE
GUIDELINES - INDUSTRY'S ROLE
INTRODUCTION
It is critical to effectively disseminate clinical practice guidelines to maximize guideline adherence. While
the industry should be firewalled from the development of guidelines and guideline recommendations,
and conflicts of interest should be managed, we believe that industry can play a vital role in the support
of the dissemination of guidelines and other valuable third-party educational content. We included a few
questions in our survey in an attempt to help quantify this need and potential.
Clinicians were asked the following questions:
1. "Please rate the value of the following handouts provided by pharmaceutical/device or other
industry reps"
a. Full-Text Guideline Reprints
b. Guideline Summaries/Pocket Guides
c. Promotional Literature Highlighting Brand Information
d. Clinical Trial Reprints
e. Samples
2. "If a pharmaceutical/device or other industry representative provides you with educational
material, how does the inclusion of a medical society logo/endorsement affect the value/
perception of the material?"
3. "Which of the following two educational handouts on a current clinical guideline would you
prefer to receive?"
a. Two images were shown portraying the same guideline recommendations on a flashcard:
One was branded with a company's pharmaceutical product, while the other included the
logo of the authoring medical society.
The charts, figures, and tables that follow, aim to shed some light on the pharmaceutical, medical device
and other industry roles for the support of guideline dissemination and implementation.
