Hemodynamic Effects of Acute Circulatory Support Pumps A: Intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation pumps (IABP) displace blood volume in the aorta and have the primary effect of reducing LV end-systolic pressure without a major change in arterial elastance (Ea) or LV volumes. B: Percutaneous LV assist devices can directly unload the LV (Impella) or indirectly unload the LV by creating a percutaneous le atrial to femoral artery bypass (pLA-FA) circuit. Both pumps will reduce LV volume and pressure in the setting of cardiogenic shock. C: Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) will increase arterial elastance (Ea) and LV endsystolic pressure without reducing LV volumes.
