Age- and Sex-Appropriate Caloric Targets
➤ Resting energy expenditure (REE) represents the energy
necessary for fundamental physiological processes while the
body is at rest and not engaged in physical activity.
➤ REE is determined by fat-free mass and is generally higher in
individuals with obesity.
➤ Typically, women aged 19–30 years require 1800–2400 calories
a day.
➤ Typically, men aged 19–30 years require 2400–3000 calories a day.
➤ Typically, women aged 31–59 years require 1600 to 2200 calories
a day.
➤ Typically, men aged 31–59 years require 2200 to 3000 calories
a day.
Relationship Between Portion Sizes and Weight Change
➤ In the past, there was emphasis on portion size and weight change.
➤ However, energy density may complicate the association between
portion size and energy intake, as larger portions of high-calorie
foods can be more detrimental than larger portions of low-calorie
foods. Calorie density is a critical factor, in addition to portion size.
➤ Increasing eating frequency is more determinant of obesity than
portion size.
➤ The portion sizes of snacks may present a concern.
➤ Consumption of higher quality/whole foods can help naturally limit
caloric intake and aid in satiety.
