21 Age- and Sex-Appropriate Caloric Targets   ➤ Resting energy expenditure (REE) represents the energy necessary for fundamental physiological processes while the body is at rest and not engaged in physical activity.   ➤ REE is determined by fat-free mass and is generally higher in individuals with obesity.   ➤ Typically, women aged 19–30 years require 1800–2400 calories a day.   ➤ Typically, men aged 19–30 years require 2400–3000 calories a day.   ➤ Typically, women aged 31–59 years require 1600 to 2200 calories a day.   ➤ Typically, men aged 31–59 years require 2200 to 3000 calories a day. Relationship Between Portion Sizes and Weight Change   ➤ In the past, there was emphasis on portion size and weight change.   ➤ However, energy density may complicate the association between portion size and energy intake, as larger portions of high-calorie foods can be more detrimental than larger portions of low-calorie foods. Calorie density is a critical factor, in addition to portion size.   ➤ Increasing eating frequency is more determinant of obesity than portion size.   ➤ The portion sizes of snacks may present a concern.   ➤ Consumption of higher quality/whole foods can help naturally limit caloric intake and aid in satiety.
