9 Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC) The TLC dietary pattern is a low-fat meal plan endorsed by the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel since 1985. This is the diet that is traditionally employed in lipid clinical trials, along with physical activity and smoking cessation. Emphasized Considerations • Total fat: 25% to 35% of daily calories   ▶ Polyunsaturated fat: Up to 10% of total daily calories   ▶ Monounsaturated fat: Up to 20% of total daily calories • Carbohydrate: 50% to 60% of total calories • Soluble f iber: At least 5 to 10 grams per day, preferably 10 to 25 grams a day. • Examples include f ruits, beans, oats • Two grams per day of plant stanols or sterols through foods or dietary supplements • Limit saturated fat   ▶ <7% of total calories • Limit cholesterol ▶ <200 mg a day • Avoid foods with trans fatty acids Ornish Diet A type of vegetarian diet focusing on fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grain; developed in 1977 by Dr. Dean Ornish. Emphasized Considerations • Foods are best eaten in their natural form • Vegetables, f ruits, whole grains, and legumes • One serving of a soy product each day • Limited amounts of green tea • Fish oil 3–4 grams daily • Small meals eaten f requently throughout the day • Limit dietary fat   ▶ <10% of total daily calories • Limit dietary cholesterol   ▶ <10 mg per day • Limit sugar, sodium, and alcohol • Eliminate animal products, including red meat, poultry, and f ish, as well as caffeine, except green tea • Avoids foods containing trans fatty acids, such as vegetable shortening, stick margarines, commercially prepared items like f rostings and cake, cookie, and biscuit mixes, crackers, microwave popcorn, and deep-f ried foods • Ref rain f rom consuming ref ined carbohydrates and oils.
