a
Metabolic syndrome cannot be diagnosed, but further measurements should be made if there is a
family history of metabolic syndrome, T2DM, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease. hypertension
and/or obesity.
b
For clinical purposes, but not for diagnosing the metabolic syndrome, if FPG 5.6–6.9 mmol/L
(100–125 mg/dL) and not known to have diabetes, an oral glucose tolerance test should be
performed.
c
For those of South and South-East Asian, Japanese, and ethnic South and Central American
origin, the cutoffs should be ≥90 cm for men and ≥80 cm for women. e IDF Consensus group
recognize that there are ethnic, gender and age differences, but research is still needed on outcomes
to establish risk.
Diagnosing the metabolic syndrome requires the presence of central obesity plus any two of the
other four factors.
