Bariatric Surgery Poor Candidates
➤ Patient is not seeking to lose weight.
➤ Medical conditions that would make surgery or anesthesia
unsafe, such as end-stage lung disease, severe heart failure,
portal hypertension, or coagulopathy.
➤ Inflammatory bowel disease, untreated gastric ulcer, or GI motility
disorders.
➤ Pregnancy or planned pregnancy within the next 2 years.
➤ Dependence on drugs or alcohol.
➤ Uncontrolled depression, psychosis, or eating disorders.
➤ Inability to commit to life-long lifestyle changes following
bariatric surgery.
Any determination to proceed with bariatric surgery should be based
upon the evaluation of an individual patient by a qualified medical
professional who specializes in the care of bariatric patients.
