Obesity and Binge Eating Disorder
➤ Recommend cognitive behavior therapy with or without
behavioral weight loss.
➤ Lisdexamfetamine dimesylate is the only pharmacotherapy with
an FDA indication to treat binge-eating disorder.
➤ Although not FDA-approved for this use, clinical trials suggest
efficacy for other pharmacotherapies, including SSRIs, topiramate
with or without phentermine, and naltrexone-bupropion.
Obesity and Night Eating Syndrome
➤ Treatment includes behavioral therapy regarding nutritional
timing and content.
➤ While not an FDA-indicated use, SSRIs (e.g., sertraline) or
topiramate may be helpful for night eating syndrome.
Obesity and ADHD
➤ Pharmacological treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD) with stimulant medications that target core
symptoms, like impulsivity and inattention, may lead to weight
stabilization or reduction in some individuals, potentially through
improved self-regulation, reduced impulsivity, and enhanced
executive function.
➤ Patients with ADHD may benefit from integrated care addressing
both physical and psychological health, with adjunct therapies
like dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, and
mindfulness, potentially improving outcomes.
