5 There are many different treatment options depending on the severity of the illness and other factors. OUTPATIENT TREATMENT Outpatient treatment can include behavioral treatment with a therapist or counselor. Outpatient treatment can also include medication treatment with a doctor. INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT PROGRAMS (IOP) OR HIGH INTENSITY OUTPATIENT PROGRAMS (HIOP) In IOP the patient typically receives 9 hours of treatment services each week. In HIOP the patient receives about 20 hours of treatment services each week. RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT Residential treatment programs provide treatment in a safe, homelike setting where the patient can practice skills needed for recovery. HOSPITAL TREATMENT Hospital treatment may be needed for patients with severe intoxication or very severe psychiatric problems that require medical and nurse care.
