Overview
➤ Osteoarthritis is one of the leading causes of pain, disability, and health care
resource use in the United States, with over 54 million (23%) older adults
diagnosed with OA and 24 million limited in performing daily activities.
➤ The etiology of glenohumeral joint osteoarthritis is similar to that of OA in
other large joints via classification into primary or degenerative for no known
cause, or secondary OA related to prior injury or disease process.
➤ There are multiple proposed risk factors for GHOA, including age, genetics,
obesity, joint loading, occupation, exercise, glenohumeral joint stability and
integrity, rotator cuff arthropathy, and scapular morphology.
➤ Psychological factors can impact pain and functional outcomes.
